From experience, many today need to learn the difference between a Ph.D. and a Th.D. Theology is not Philosophy. Regarding theology, both a Th.D. and a Ph.D. are equivalent degrees. The U.S. National Science Foundation considers the ThD and Ph.D. equivalent doctorate programs. There is no higher degree of study or accomplishment. “ThD” stands for “Doctor of Theology,” while “Ph.D.” stands for “Doctor of Philosophy.” Though the Th.D. and Ph.D. are equivalent doctorate programs, the main difference between the ThD and the Ph.D. is that Theology studies Christian theology. On the other hand, a Ph.D. is a doctorate program that may cover various religions and practices.
